About

Situated on the Great Sacandaga Lake, the library serves residents in an remote rural area at the crossroads of three Adirondack counties: Fulton, Hamilton and Saratoga, NY. The lake was a man-made project created in 1930 with the building of the Conklingville Dam, design to control the flooding of the Hudson River and its tributaries. Since then the lake has become a major tourist destination.
With the creation of the lake, came the dislocation of communities, cemeteries, and highways. One community affected was Sacandaga Park, known as the Coney Island of the North (c.1880 – 1930). This hamlet, accessible by railroad service, had many hotels, cottages, a golf course, amusement area, sport events, theatre, and general outdoor activities.
A selection of postcards from the local history collection in the library’s Sacandaga Room depicts various sites around Sacandaga Park. The materials in this collection support research and genealogy for the Village of Northville / Town of Northampton and surrounding communities.
